Why Australians Should Be Vaping Medical Marijuana

Fellow Australians, it’s time to catch up with the rest of the world! Medical marijuana is putting people’s health back into their own hands and it’s having huge implications on the pharmaceutical industry.

That’s right, ordinary people around the world like yourself are realizing the potential for cannabis to help with a whole range of medical conditions, without the nasty side effects that so often accompany the drugs which are typically prescribed by your doctor.

Cannabis is proving to be safe, effective, and very good for you - and one of the best ways to consume it with the use of a vaporizer.

What is vaping and why is it so popular?

Vaporizing (or vaping) is a relatively new way of administering cannabis and other dry herbs. the method of heating your dry herb (such as cannabis) until its volatile oils are released (or vaporized) and then inhaling them.

Predictably, a vaporizer is used for this process. A vaporizer is a gadget - usually handheld and battery powered - that heats plant material to a predetermined temperature. There are many vaporizers on the market today, ranging from budget devices to top of the range. Some are designed for dry flower, while others are designed for oil concentrates and extracts.

Vaporizing avoids combustion and, therefore, does not produce all the harmful chemicals that occur when a dry herb is burned. Vaping is also a very efficient way of consuming cannabis as none of the plant’s cannabinoids (the active chemical compounds with huge medicinal value) are burned off, as is the case when cannabis is smoked.

This has seen it rapidly grow in popularity in Europe and the U.S., where it is now one of the most used methods for consuming marijuana.

Benefits of marijuana and why it’s better than many medications

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years you would have noticed the increased attention being given to cannabis and its health benefits. Due to the relaxation of laws around the world, the controversial plant is finally being rigorously studied with some more than promising results.

To name but a few, cannabis has been shown to help treat conditions such as:

  • Neuropathic pain
  • Depression
  • PTSD
  • Diabetes
  • Psoriasis
  • Psychiatric disorders
  • Sleep disorders
  • Anxiety

Much of marijuana's medicinal value is down to its cannabinoids, most notably THC and CBD. However, the various terpenes and flavonoids - the compounds responsible for cannabis’ distinctive smell and taste - are also thought to play a part. Vaporizers also release these chemicals upon heating, meaning you get the full ‘entourage effect’ from your herb.

Why you should vape your marijuana

There are two main reasons why vaping is sweeping the marijuana world. Number one: It’s healthier. This is because you are not inhaling the many harmful chemicals that combustion (smoking) produces, including carbon monoxide and other known carcinogens.

Number two: It’s more efficient. As noted above, when you smoke cannabis, much if the cannabinoids and other valuable chemical compounds are burned away. However, when you vape your buds at specific temperatures (around 210°C), you get around 95% of the plant’s goodness (cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids). This means your herb will go a lot further than if you were to smoke it. It also means that the vapor you inhale is cooler, tastier, and packs a punch.

Vaping marijuana is also extremely popular for public consumption. Many of the best vapes out there are small and look fairly innocuous, meaning you can medicate walking down the street and no one would bat an eyelid. They might wonder where that wonderful smell is coming from, however.

Is medical marijuana legal in Australia?

While the laws surrounding medical marijuana in Australia have been relaxed earlier this year, the recreational use of marijuana is still prohibited. Saying that, Australia is still one of the most progressive countries when it comes to marijuana use, with a number of politicians voicing their support for cannabis legalization in recent years.

One cannabis derivative, known as cannabidiol (or CBD) is legal, however. This non-psychoactive cannabis compound does not get you ‘high’ yet still offers much of the medicinal value that whole-plant cannabis provides. CBD is derived from hemp - which is cannabis grown for industrial purposes, with little to no THC (the main psychoactive compound in cannabis) - and is, therefore, legal in Australia.

Cannabis offers immense medicinal value and makes an effective, safe, and natural alternative to often toxic pharmaceuticals. Vaping is a clean method for consuming dry herbs with minimal risks. The two are a match made in heaven.
